We had old shingle tiles on our roof and knew it needed to be replaced. There was algae growing on the roof that was growing under the shingles and causing them to lift. As many times as my husband sprayed with algaecide, it just came back with a vengeance. I started looking for local roofing contractors and it amazed me at the amount of roofers in our area. Most of them offered free quotes for roofs. We started looking at the different shingles, metal roofs, and vinyl roofs. I loved the many colors and told my husband we could match the roofing to the siding, but he wanted the roof to be white. I wanted the red vinyl roof. We argued over what type of roofing we wanted, but we still hadn’t contacted a roofing contractor for a quote. The next day, I called four roofing contractors and asked for a free quote on our new roof. I scheduled one a day for the next four days. Three of the four contractors were very close in pricing, but one of them had everything written in the estimate that was included in the roofing job. He even figured in how many screws would be needed, and the gutters. I wasn’t sure he was the right roofing contractor, but my husband thought he was perfect. I thought we should look at the other roofing contractors before making a final decision, since there were so many of them in the area. Although I was hesitant using this roofing contractor, when the job was done, the roof looked amazing.

We had metal siding put on our home about 25 years ago. Over the years, hail, flying tree branches, stones, and balls had done a lot of damage to the siding. After all those years of abuse, we thought siding replacement was necessary. We were talking about downgrading and moving into a smaller house now that our children are grown and out of the house. We had several upgrades that needed done before we could sell that would make a tremendous difference in the price we could get for the house. The first improvement was removing the old metal siding, putting new insulation in the house, and having vinyl siding replacement installed. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go the expense of the siding replacement, but the realtor insisted. She told us we could ask five times the amount of the cost of the siding replacement and get it. We had to take out a loan for the siding replacement, but if the realtor was correct, we could pay off the loan and still have extra money when the house sold. It took less than a month for the vinyl siding replacement to be completed, and the house looked amazing. While waiting for the old house to sell, we were going to look for a smaller house. When we saw how nice the new vinyl siding looked, we were glad we had done the siding replacement. We found the perfect cottage that was just right for my husband and I and we knew we would be proud to have anyone come to the house.

My son doesn’t think he should be held responsible when he ‘accidentally’ does damage to the house. He thinks that since he lives with us, we should pay for everything. Last year, my husband and I were at the shore on the 4th of July. My son, being twenty-five, should have been capable of staying home alone. He wasn’t a teenager, and we thought he could be an adult. We were wrong. He invited a bunch of people to our house, and they were setting off fireworks. No one was watching where they were landing after going off in the air, but we knew where they landed. Our neighbor and best friends called to tell us the fire company was at our house. The fireworks landed on the roof of the house and set the shingles on fire. Luckily, they had all our information and called us right away. I called our son and told him to call the insurance company, but he waited until we got home. I had to have a new roof on the house, and he was lucky the fire company was only two blocks away, or the house would have burned down. I told our son he was going to pay for the new roof. He insisted the insurance company would pay for the roof, but I shook my head. The insurance company was going to sue him for the damage if it was up to me. He should have been more careful. Since the police already knew what happened, they wrote our son up for the damage and shooting off fireworks within the town’s limits, which was a definite no-no. He couldn’t believe we were going to make him reimburse the insurance company for the new roof.

When I found out a neighbor gave his six-year-old son a BB gun for his birthday, I went ballistic. Who in their right mind would give a six-year-old boy something that could be potentially dangerous? Although the kid didn’t hurt himself, he shot holes in my brand new siding. I took pictures of the siding and showed it to the boy’s father. He insisted his son couldn’t do such a thing. I showed him a picture of the kid pointing the BB gun at our house and our dog. He told me he would pay for the damage if I could prove his son did it, but he didn’t think the pictures were proof. I called the police, and they came out to investigate. They found BBs inside some holes, where they got stuck in the insulation. There were BBs on the ground, and the vet dug a few out of our dog and the cat. I took a handful of BBs, the police report, the vet bill, and the estimate to have the siding repaired, over to the neighbor’s house. I gave him the evidence and told him it was up to him to refute the evidence. He didn’t know how I could prove the BBs came from his son’s gun until the kid came flying out of his bedroom. He took one look at the dog and me, and ran back into his room. I thought that was enough proof to have him pay for the repair to the siding and to pay my vet bill. If he didn’t think it was enough, I would take him to small claims court.

Contracting

My husband and I had recently invested in a rental property. When we bought the house, it was in good condition, but things changed. Some of the local boys thought the house was abandoned and started throwing rocks at the windows. Even though what they did, wasn’t right, I was once a kid who had brothers with a lot of extra energy. The only thing we could do was get someone to give us an estimate for window replacements and door replacements throughout the building. I called one company, and they offered to go to the building. They said they would meet my husband there the following Saturday at 8 AM. My husband was working, so I went in his stead. When the man from the window replacement company showed up, he looked right past me and asked where my husband was. I told him he could talk to me about window replacements, but he didn’t act like he wanted to talk to me. I explained my husband was working, and he asked if there would be a better time for him. I laughed. After explaining to him that my husband and I were a partnership, and if he couldn’t talk to me, I would look elsewhere. He suddenly became very chatty. Although his pricing for window and door replacements was reasonable, we went to another company. My husband didn’t like it when people acted like I was just a stupid woman when I took care of our business decisions. The other window and door replacement company was cheaper, and they were easier to work with.

Two days later, even though rain was falling, there were three young men jumping around on our roof and completing the replacement.

Last month’s storm took us by surprise. The weather forecaster said we could wind gusts up to fifty miles per hour, but we knew the one gust was much stronger than that. We have a lot of wind sheer where we live, and the latest sheared half our roof off. They told us it wasn’t a tornado, but wind sheer definitely removed it. Unfortunately, being told this made little difference. Regardless of the reason, we had to have the roof replaced. I called our homeowner’s insurance and once the insurance adjuster looked at the roof; he told us to get someone to the house and they would pay for the repairs. Now, we have another problem. The nearest appointment we could get was two weeks away, and it was supposed to rain soon. I called one of the local Amish roofing companies, who took the time to come to the house and give us an estimate to replace the roof. It was more expensive than what the insurance adjuster had quoted, but we needed to have the roof put on. Two days later, even though rain was falling, there were three young men jumping around on our roof and completing the replacement. It blew me away to see how easy they made it look to go from side to side on the roof, and not fall off. When they were done, I called the insurance company and sent them the bill. Even though it was higher than they expected, they paid the entire roofing bill. We didn’t get any rain in our house, which made me happy.
